Born in Poland, Tomasz’s family immigrated to Australia as refugees in 1989. These early days in Sydney’s Western Suburb of Fairfield were marked by hard work and hard knocks.
Both parents, Teresa and Michal were medical doctors in Poland but struggled for many years to get through the gruelling process of converting their qualifications in Australia. This period left a lasting mark on Tomasz and his family. Only Michal went on to practice as a doctor in Australia, while Teresa decided to become an author of numerous Polish Language novels and poetry.
Growing up with his creative and inspiring brother, Mikolaj, Tomasz navigated these early years of immigrant life with his family.
High school was where Tomasz was able to tap into his ability to work hard and get results. He became the ‘Most Improved’ student in the first year of high school, giving him a taste for the benefits of studying. He went on to graduate in the top 3% of the state, with particular merit in Mathematics. Along the way, he represented the school in Rugby Union, Basketball, Snowboarding and Swimming.
University was a time of personal growth. Studying at the University of New South Wales, with a study abroad year at the University of California, Santa Cruz, exposed Tomasz to a wide range of people and experiences. It opened his eyes to the world and the possibilities of what can be done within in.
Upon graduation, Tomasz worked in the Investment Banking world in the height of the Pre-GFC era. He worked in Australia and London, living through the ‘runs on the bank’ as things started to unwind. Luckily for him, he was concurrently preparing to enter medical school after deciding that a lifetime of Investment Banking, although profitable, was not a satisfying way to live his life. He wanted to make more of a direct positive impact with his life.
It took Tomasz a number of attempts to pass the tough selection process for medical school, but eventually he succeeded. He used this experience to develop a business, PassGAMSAT, while still in medical school. He subsequently helped over 45,000 people prepare for that entrance exam, creating countless numbers of doctors in the process.
The experiences he gained in medical school, the knowledge he learnt, the skills he developed, the people he met, the things he saw and lived through, and the patients he helped could not have happened if he had done anything else in these years. He has immense gratitude for and incredible positive memories (despite the tough times) of this period.
Med school was a pressure cooker where Tomasz learnt to perform at an extremely high level. Studying with people who were used to being outstanding performers, as well as running a growing business, maintaining an amazing long term relationship, staying in shape and finding time to sleep, Tomasz learnt about mindset and high performance techniques which he uses to this day.
Excited to finally get out into the medical field, the now Dr Tom, started his doctor life working in Sydney’s St George hospital, at which point, his adventures went to the another level. Read more about that in “The Doctor” section.
Born in Poland, my family immigrated to Australia as refugees in 1989, settling in Sydney’s Western Suburb of Fairfield. These formative years were defined by resilience and adaptation. Both my parents, Teresa and Michal, were medical doctors in Poland but faced a challenging journey to requalify in Australia. My father eventually returned to medical practice, while my mother pivoted to a successful career as an author, publishing numerous Polish language novels and poetry.
Growing up in an immigrant household, I quickly learned the value of perseverance. High school was a turning point, where hard work transformed my academic trajectory. Graduating in the top 3% of the state, I developed a strong foundation in Mathematics and balanced my studies with representing my school in sports like Rugby, Basketball, and Snowboarding.
University broadened my horizons. Studying at the University of New South Wales, with a year abroad at the University of California, Santa Cruz, exposed me to diverse perspectives and experiences, sparking a lifelong curiosity. My first professional chapter in investment banking during the pre-GFC era provided invaluable insights into high-stakes decision-making, but it also highlighted a gap between financial success and personal fulfillment. I pivoted toward a career where I could make a more direct impact.
Determined to pursue medicine, I overcame several attempts at the rigorous selection process. While in medical school, I channeled my entrepreneurial spirit into founding Thank Flip GAMSAT, an education company that has since helped over 45,000 aspiring doctors achieve their goals. Balancing a growing business with demanding studies, I honed critical skills in leadership, operational excellence, and time management.
A pivotal moment in my journey was meeting Mare, the amazing woman who became my wife. From the end of my undergraduate studies, Mare’s energy, passion, and sense of humor have been a constant source of inspiration. Together, we’ve lived and traveled extensively, built a business from the ground up, and worked side by side as a husband-and-wife team. This close partnership has not only strengthened our bond but also taught us invaluable lessons about teamwork, resilience, and shared purpose. Our greatest joy now comes from raising our little girl, Ruby.
Medical school and clinical practice were deeply rewarding chapters that shaped my problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Now, I’m driven to apply my diverse experiences—from medicine to entrepreneurship—to address healthcare’s most pressing challenges. Whether through innovative ventures or strategic problem-solving, my mission is to improve lives at scale.
